Today marks a significant day for Apple enthusiasts as the company begins rolling out major operating system updates for most of its devices (Mac users will have to wait a bit longer). Just in time for the upcoming releases of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 later this week, Apple has unveiled watchOS 10. If you own an Apple Watch Series 4 or a newer model, you can install this update right away.
One of the most noteworthy changes is the reintroduction of widgets, reminiscent of the original Apple Watch’s Glances feature. These widgets are now available for every watch face, and two new ones have been added. You can conveniently navigate through your widgets using the Digital Crown, gaining quick access to features like timers, stopwatches, and podcasts when they are in use.
Additionally, the World Clock app has received an enhancement that makes it easier to grasp the time in different parts of the world at a glance. This is achieved through dynamic background colors for various timezones. In the Activity app, you can rotate the crown to access more data via corner shortcuts. Cyclists will appreciate the ability to connect to Bluetooth bike sensors for enhanced data tracking. Furthermore, the Compass, Mindfulness, and Medications apps are all receiving updates.
Two of the most significant updates pertain to FaceTime. Now, you can view FaceTime video messages on your Watch and participate in Group FaceTime audio calls.
For those eagerly awaiting the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, these new devices will feature exclusive enhancements powered by the new S9 SiP (System in Package). These include on-device processing of Siri requests, reducing reliance on Apple’s servers. Additionally, a new Double Tap feature has been designed by Apple to simplify performing primary actions within each app. Both of these devices will be available starting September 22.
