AirPods Pro Features Coming to Regular AirPods Next Year

Apple has a plan to revamp its entire AirPods lineup, with updates scheduled for 2024 and 2025, as reported by Bloomberg. The company will initiate this refresh by introducing new iterations of its standard AirPods and AirPods Max headphones in the upcoming year. Subsequently, a new AirPods Pro model is expected to make its debut in 2025.

Currently, Apple’s lineup includes the second-generation AirPods from 2019, priced at $129, and the third-generation model introduced in 2021. The latter, priced at $169, comes with an upgraded design, extended battery life, wireless charging, and improved sound quality. However, customers have not fully embraced the benefits of the third-generation model, as the more affordable second-generation version and the noise-canceling AirPods Pro continue to outsell it.

In response, Apple is planning to replace both the second and third-generation models in 2024 with two new versions featuring more diverse specifications. According to Bloomberg, these new models will sport a design that combines elements of the 2021 AirPods with the aesthetics of the AirPods Pro, both characterized by shorter stems. The higher-priced version will offer active noise cancellation (ANC) and speakers in the case to play Find My sounds—features currently found in the AirPods Pro. Both new models will provide an improved fit, although replaceable tips are not expected for either. Furthermore, the fourth-generation models will transition to USB-C charging cases, following the trend set by this year’s Pro model update.

Speculation regarding a refresh of the AirPods Max has circulated for some time, mainly concerning the timing of an updated model rather than specific details. Bloomberg indicates that Apple will adopt USB-C for its over-ear headphones late next year, introducing new color options without substantial feature changes. As for a new AirPods Pro version, the report suggests it won’t be unveiled until 2025. Apple is reportedly working on integrating new health-focused features for AirPods Pro, particularly related to hearing. Last year, the company introduced the H2 chip in the second-generation AirPods Pro, which powers features such as Adaptive Audio, Personalized Volume, and Conversation Awareness.
