Volvo has introduced its inaugural fully electric minivan, the EM90, designed with a primary focus on comfort. Described by the brand as a “living room on the move,” the EV is positioned not only as a cozy travel space, suitable for wearing pajamas, but also as an ideal environment for productive work.
The EM90 incorporates advanced sound isolation and road noise cancellation technology, and Volvo asserts that the dual-chamber air suspension and noiseless tires contribute to a seamlessly smooth ride for both the driver and passengers. The vehicle’s audio system, equipped with 21 Bowers & Wilkins speakers, promises an immersive experience.
In addition to a 15.4-inch infotainment screen for the driver, a roof-mounted 15.6-inch HD display is available, allowing users to stream shows and movies from their phones. The screen can also serve for video calls when paired with a compatible camera. With 5G connectivity, the EM90 caters to users with a focus on business-related tasks.
Numerous features of the EM90 can be effortlessly managed through voice commands, covering aspects such as audio settings and interior lighting. The car’s screens, seats, windows, air conditioner, and lighting can be adjusted for various settings, such as transforming the interior into a theater, meeting room, or even a bedroom setup for the rear seats, all by either voice command or a simple switch, according to Volvo.
The EM90’s design may ring a bell, as it is derived from Zeekr’s 009, Volvo’s sibling brand, as noted by Electrek. Propelled by a 200 kW electric motor, the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph (62.1 mph) in 8.3 seconds. It houses a 116 kWh battery, featuring bi-directional charging support, with Volvo asserting a charging capability from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes.
In addition to its performance attributes, the EM90 boasts an impressive range, at least on paper. Volvo claims a range of up to 738 km (459 miles) based on China’s CLTC testing cycle. Initially available only in China, the EV comes with a starting price of approximately $114,000, with no clear indication of its potential availability in other regions.
