When the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) introduced the Qi2 charging standard earlier this year, it was highlighted that it incorporated Apple’s MagSafe technology. Consequently, the iPhone 15 series is set to be among the initial smartphones embracing this new wireless charging method. Apple’s rapid adoption of this technology is somewhat unusual, although the company has previously accommodated Qi wireless charging.
In essence, new wireless chargers for the iPhone 15 are on the horizon, expected to debut this holiday season. The WPC has announced that companies like Belkin, Mophie, Anker, and Aircharge have pre-announced Qi2 products designed to seamlessly integrate with Apple’s latest devices. Over 100 devices, including Anker’s recently revealed MagGo charger lineup, are currently undergoing testing for an imminent release.
What sets Qi2 apart? The WPC promotes faster charging, higher efficiency, and enhanced convenience. Serving as a replacement for the original Qi charging standard, which is now over 13 years old, Qi2 supports 15-watt charging and incorporates features such as foreign object detection. This new platform prioritizes safety measures to prevent device damage or the shortening of battery life.
One of the most compelling aspects of Qi2 is its emphasis on interoperability. As an industry-wide standard, it allows users to use a single Qi2 charger with a diverse range of devices, regardless of global location. The protocol even accommodates the charging of uniquely shaped accessories that typically face challenges with flat charging pads.
To distinguish authenticity, all Qi2 devices will feature a distinctive logo for branding purposes. And as a side note, it’s pronounced “chee two” for those engaging in casual conversations, like at a dinner party. Just a friendly heads-up.
